The old Pine Grove church house is the oldest church building in Rusk County, Texas. It has not been used by an active congregation since 1906. Congregation and community members built the old church house circa 1870, but the Pine Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church itself was established around 1850.
The Pine Grove Cemetery Homecoming and Rusk County Singing Convention use the building. Both events are held annually on the fourth weekend in April. The Pine Grove Church has a long-standing connection to Sacred Harp singing. The church even used The Sacred Harp songbook in its services.
The elements and time have not been kind to the old structure. It is in grave need of repairs. Lack of funds has hindered any work beyond the most required attention. The East Texas Shapenote Music Association has taken on the restoration of this building.. Funds are needed. The foundation has been leveled. Next large projects are the roof and painting. Windows and shutters, eaves, doors, and floor all need some repair.
